Born March 7, 1926 in Winganon, Oklahoma to John A. and Bertha (Ketchum) Douglas, A.K. attended school, first in Winganon and later Talala, where he played basketball. He was drafted into the Army before he graduated high school, and he spent two years defending his country. Following his honorable discharge, A.K. returned to Talala and finished his senior year, graduating with the class of 1947. He began working for his future father-in-law, delivering propane. Following his marriage to Novelena in 1951, the two purchased the business from her parents, and they worked together for the next 42 years, retiring in 1992.
A.K. loved to fish. He taught his kids and grandkids the art of catching their limit. His other hobbies included camping and square dancing. He also enjoyed watching basketball; ORU and TU were among his favorites. A.K. was a master at fixing just about anything. He could take something apart, clean it and put it back together, and it would work like new. Family was most important to him, and he took great care of them. He liked watching his grandkids’ sports, or anything they were involved in. A.K. had a soft heart and often gave of his time and finances to those who were in need. This sometimes got him in trouble with his wife, who paid the bills.
Those family members that survive include his children Deborah Whisenhunt and husband Larry of Chelsea, Duane Douglas and wife Robbin of Claremore, and David Douglas and wife Rhonda, also of Chelsea; his grandsons Steven Whisenhunt, Doug Whisenhunt, Chris Whisenhunt, Dan Whisenhunt, Landon Douglas, Logan Douglas and Geoff Adams; 11 great-grandchildren; and his sisters Ida England and Dortha Reavis.
A.K. was preceded in death by his parents, wife Novelena; great-grandsons Andrew Whisenhunt and Easton Whisenhunt; brothers Jerry Douglas and John R. Douglas; sister Juanita Moore and brothers-in-law Robert Moore, Buck England, and Everette Reavis.
