Funeral service for Amandus J.D. "A.J." Young will be 11 a.m., Tues., Sept. 6, at the Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Chapel with Rev. Charlie Kellehan officiating. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Navy will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Mon. 1-6 p.m.
A.J. died Thurs., Sept. 1, 2011, at the Claremore Veterans Center at the age of 81.
The son of Jess D. and Mable C. (Kistler) Young was born Sept. 13, 1929, in Rocky Comfort, MO. A.J. graduated from Granby High School, and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. On June 6, 1954, A.J. married Norma Lou Smith. They moved to Tulsa in the late 50's. In 1972, they made their home on Oologah Lake. Norma passed away in 1993. He married Rita Mae Combs in 1997. A.J. worked as an installer for Western Electric and AT&T Communications. He loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports, especially basketball. A.J. also enjoyed fishing, especially trout fishing in the White River.
A.J. is preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Lou; his parents; his brothers: Joe and Carl Young; and daughter-in-law, Donna Young.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Mae of the home; sons: Jay Dee Young of Pryor, Bret Young and wife, Terri of Claremore, and Alan Young of Claremore; daughter, Sue Ann Young-Gull of Catoosa; step-sons: Mike Capps and wife, Missi of Jenks, and Phillip Sams of Tulsa; step-daughters: Priscilla Sakmary and husband, Bud of Broken Arrow, and Beverly Smith of Inola; sister, Gearldine Judd of Granby, MO; grandchildren: Ashley Dawn Culver and husband, Clint, Angela Brook Young, Dalton Lou Gull, and Lucas Aaron Gull; and great-grandchildren: Clay Lewis Culver and Kyle Andrew Culver.
