Andrew Johnson (John) Baker, 91, passed away June 24, 2010, at St. Francis Hospital.

John was born on June 10, 1919, in Checotah, Oklahoma, to parents Harry and Retha Baker. He was raised on a farm near Checotah, Ok., and attended school at Texana. Following school, he farmed with his father and was involved in amateur boxing in Muskogee. The colorful character that he was, he decided to hop a freight train bound for California during the Depression, where he remained for a few years and worked. Upon returning to Oklahoma, he settled down, married and had a son, John Bruce. Three years later, John moved the family to Fresno, California, to find work, and two years later his daughter, Brenda, was born. He returned to Oklahoma in 1949, where John has remained.
John retired from Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa where his primary job was hanging engines on aircraft. John was quite the outdoorsman; enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening.

In 1966, John and Oleta were married in Nowata, Oklahoma. They were best friends enjoying fishing every chance they could. They purchased a full-service gas station and operated it for 20 years. In John’s second retirement, he planted a large vegetable garden every year. He loved to share the produce with family, friends and neighbors. John and Oleta reside in Claremore, Oklahoma.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Retha and six siblings: Buster, Orville, Vi, Connie, Kelly and Judy.

John is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Oleta, and two children: John Bruce Baker and his wife, Mary, of Wagner, and Brenda Maples and her husband, Ed, of Broken Arrow; and three step-sons: Gary Andrews and wife Treila of Claremore, Michael Andrews and wife Lydia of Lowell, Ark., and Keith Andrews and his wife, Debbie of Claremore and 11 grandchildren.
