The couple learned to garden from a neighbor and gardening became on their favorite pastimes. They made a large garden every year. Bertie also enjoyed quilting and crocheting. They moved to Claremore early in 1999 to be near their son, Larry and family. Bertie was a member of First United Methodist Church.
