Funeral service for lifelong Rogers County resident Betty Horner will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2023, at the First Baptist Church of Chelsea. Burial will follow at the Chelsea Cemetery, under the direction of the Chelsea Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
Betty Marie Horner passed away on Saturday, December 31st, 2022, at the age of 97.
The daughter of Granville Carlyle and Mattie England Cook was born April 5th, 1925, at her grandmother's home in Bushyhead. As a young girl, she would live in the Bushyhead area, where she would attend the England School. In the years to follow, Betty would meet Wayne Horner. They would eventually begin dating and married on June 21, 1941. The newlywed couple would make their home in the Chelsea area. There they would begin raising their family. However, in May of 1944, Wayne was drafted into the U.S. Army. This left Betty at home as the sole care giver until Wayne was discharged in July of 1945. A few years later, with the development of the Oologah Lake, the family would make one last move back to the Bushyhead area, and settle at the current home site, which was Betty's mother's original Indian allotment. As her children became older, Betty decided to begin working. She took a job at the Bushyhead School, where she worked as a cook until it was closed down. She then started a long career with the Cherokee Nation working as a CHR until her retirement.
In her spare time, Betty enjoyed many hobbies and past times. For many years, she was an avid softball player. Playing co-ed up into her early 60's. She enjoyed raising flowers, and a vegetable garden, and was a charter member of the Rebekah Lodge. However, it was her family that she enjoyed the most. Being around her children and grandchildren brought her great joy.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Granville Carlyle and Mattie Cook; husband, Wayne Horner; sons, Donnie Horner and Gary Wayne Horner.
Survivors include her children: Brenda Edwards and husband Randy, Tony Horner and wife Pat, and daughter-in-law Nancy Montgomery; grandchildren: Mike Horner and Dee Lofgren, Kim Payne, Heather Bassett and Chris Bales, Amanda Merritt and husband Rowdy, Callie Horner and Logan DeBoer, Angie Bowker and Jack V. Felts, Mark Bowker and wife Teresa, Kevin Horner and wife Adrienne, Kristy Horner and Chris Richards, Jamie Quigley and wife Kim, and Misty Cody and husband Tim; 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
