Funeral service for Betty Marie Sumter will be 10 a.m., Fri., May 14, at Church of the Nazarene with Rev. J.J. James and Rev. Scottie Behm officiating. Burial will follow at Martin (Happy Hill) Cemetery, Centralia, under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory. Chaplain Richard Cogan will perform the graveside service. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thurs. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.
Betty died Mon., May 10, 2010, at her home at the age of 78 surrounded by her family.
The daughter of Virgil and Pansy (Russell) DeNoyer was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Vinita. She attended school in Sageeyah before graduating from Claremore High School in 1949 and worked for the phone company in downtown Claremore. She married Henry Sumter, Jr. on January 8, 1950, and moved to Texarkana, AR where they had three children. They later moved to Palestine, TX, and after several years they moved to Missouri, eventually settling in Neosho where she lived for 28 years. When her marriage ended, she began working outside the home. She retired from La-Z-Boy where she worked as a quality inspector. Betty later moved back to Claremore where she attended Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed anything outdoors, especially camping, fishing, and gardening.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her children: Lloyd Sumter of Salina, Debra Gorham of Neosho, MO, and Linda Childers and husband, Richard of Claremore; grandchildren: Jason Gorham and wife, Yurie of Neosho, MO, Major Brad Sumter and wife, Angie of Whitby, England, Jennifer Holden and husband, Brian of Claremore, and Brian Childers of Claremore; great-grandchildren: Alec and Cameron Gorham of Neosho, MO, Owen Sumter of Whitby, England, and Hannah, Abigail, Elizabeth, and Joseph Holden all of Claremore; sister, Jessie Dossman and husband, Ron of Canon City, CO, several cousins and special friends: Phyllis Harvey and Glenda Merkle.
