Mass of Christian Burial for Carmen Syble Mahoney will be 10 a.m., Sat., Feb. 12, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church with Father Paul Eichhoff officiating. Burial will follow at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory. A prayer service will be held 7 p.m., Fri., at the funeral home. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Fri. 1-7 p.m.
Carmen died Sun., Feb. 6, 2011, at Wood Manor Nursing Home at the age of 92.
The daughter of Abijah and Elizabeth (Heilman) Alley was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Bernice. Carmen graduated from high school in Melvern, KS; and continued her education at Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS. She taught for a short time as a country school teacher. On Oct. 5, 1943, she married Joseph Daniel Mahoney, Sr. at St. Patricks Catholic Church, Chanute, KS. They made their home in Stark, KS, before moving to Broken Bow in 1966. In 1969, they moved to Claremore. Carmen was a longtime member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. She was also active in TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly). She loved her TOPS friends and was proud of her KOPS status. Carmen loved spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and walking with her neighborhood friends. She loved her cats, bird watching, and reading. While raising her family she made wonderful homemade bread, pies, and cakes, gardening, and canning produce. She also raised chickens and turkeys.
Carmen is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents; brothers: Jim and Ben Alley; and sisters: Pauline Alley and Ruth Duncan.
She is survived by her sons: Joseph "Joe" Mahoney, Jr. and wife, Pam of Louisburg, KS, and John Mahoney and wife, Judy of Claremore; daughters: Elizabeth Crouch and husband, Bob of Shell Knob, MO, Rose Dupus and husband, Steve of Edmond, and Teresa Tow and husband, John of Claremore; grandchildren: Jon Morgan of Oklahoma City, Brad Tow of Edmond, Chad Duncan of Louisburg, KS, Corey Duncan of Joplin, MO, Jenna Tow of Norman, Kris Kilkenny of Edmond, and Cassi Vohs of Louisburg, KS; and 10 great-grandchildren.
