Donald Crutchfield

July 24, 1927 — January 3, 2018

Donald Lee Crutchfield, age 90, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at his home while bravely fighting cancer.

Mr. Crutchfield is survived by his son Brent Crutchfield and wife Patti, his granddaughter Andrea Simpson and husband Tyler, his grandson Eric Crutchfield, his great granddaughters Chloe Simpson, Olivia Simpson, Lucy Simpson, and his great grandson Ryder Crutchfield.

Don was born and raised in Claremore, Oklahoma, the only son of Joseph and Opal Crutchfield.  He went to Claremore Public Schools and graduated from Claremore High School in 1945.  As a child, he loved and admired his parents and aspired to be in the Army just like his father.  In 1946 he enlisted in the US Navy serving on the USS Hancock in World War II.  He was assigned to the US Army in the Korean War from 1951-1952 in the 2nd Armored Division 12th Armored Infantry Battalion.

After the war, Don attended and graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Military Science and began his masters in Accounting.  In 1953, he started work as an accountant with Amerada Hess where he had a successful career until his retirement in 1992.  Also in 1953, Don married Margaret Akin at the First Baptist Church in Claremore, OK and they were happily married for 55 years until her death in 2008. They had a son Brent in 1958, who was the most important part of their lives.

Don was dedicated to a life of service, to our country while serving in the military, but also within his community.  He has been a member of the Claremore Christian Church since childhood and served as treasurer for many years.  He also served for 50 years on the Claremore School Board and 10 years on the Oklahoma State School Board Association.  He received many awards for his dedication to the school board including having the Crutchfield Center named in his honor.  Don was also a member of the Petroleum Accountants Society, Rotary Club, and a Mason for over 50 years.
Don was a deeply loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  All of those who knew him were touched by his wit, kindness, and generous heart.  Don will be greatly missed.  As he once said, "Remember after I am gone the importance of family, the importance of love, and the importance of service to others."

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Claremore Public School Foundation to P.O. Box 575 Claremore, Oklahoma 74018
