Mass of Christian burial for Dr. Juan F. Legarreta-Lopez will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 10:00am at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church from 2:00-7:00pm with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm.
Dr. Juan F. Legarreta-Lopez passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the age of 74.
Juan was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 22, 1950, to German Legarreta and Mercedes Lopez.
He graduated from High School at Saint Juan Bosco Catholic School in 1968. Juan then went into the Army and served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1972. He was awarded a bronze star for his service in Vietnam and was then honorably discharged. In 1973, Juan started college and earned his bachelor’s in biology. In 1973, he met Lourdes Rivera in Karate class, and they began dating in August of that year. In 1977, Juan began medical school and would graduate in 1980 with doctorate degree in internal medicine.
Juan won many awards for his service as a doctor including, National Register’s Who’s Who, Leading Health Professionals of the World 2006, Diplomat - American Academy of Pain Management, and America’s Top Physicians.
In 1979, Juan and Lourdes would marry, after she finished nursing school.
They would move to Texas in 1990 where Juan would begin working in the federal prison in Fort Worth. After a year, they would move to Weatherford where Juan began working in the Indian Health Services. He worked in Weatherford for a year before transferring to Claremore to continue working for Indian Health Services and at the pain management clinic. He held many titles and had many achievements including, Director Pain Management Clinic, Director of Respiratory Therapy, Chairman Infection Control, Department of Internal Medicine, and A.B.I. Board Advisor. Juan would work for Indian Health Services for 20 years before transferring to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Vinita where he would work until his retirement in 2014.
Juan was the president of the board for Rogers County Free Health Care Clinic. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1995. Juan was a devoted member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and served as an usher there for many years. He also served on the security team at St. Cecilia and helped with Spanish church community.
Juan was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Juan Legarreta.
He is survived by his wife, Lourdes; daughters, Joan Legarreta, Yamile Acevedo and husband Edgardo; granddaughters, Jazmine Algarin Legarreta, Annabelle Algarin Legarreta, Fatima Acevedo, and Savannah Acevedo along with other family members, friends, co-workers and acquaintances.
