Funeral service for Esther Boumi York will be 11 a.m., Mon., April 22, at the Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Chapel in Claremore with Father William Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Chelsea Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sun. 1-6 p.m.
Esther passed away Tues., April 16, 2013, at Sterling House of Claremore at the age of 88.
The daughter of Petros and Athena (Karastathi) Boumi was born Aug. 25, 1924 in Athens, Greece. On Oct. 1, 1948, Esther married James Franklin York in New York. They made their home in Chelsea in 1949 where they operated a dairy. In 1954, they moved their home and dairy to Skiatook. When the 1959 flood in Skiatook wiped them out, they did not re-establish their dairy business. They instead only worked their beef cattle until they retired in 2005. In 1976, when the Corps of Engineers bought their farm for Skiatook Lake they moved to a farm in Oologah. She also worked several years as a secretary for Creamer & Dunlap. Esther was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Tulsa.
Esther is preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, James; daughter, Petrina A. York and husband, Robert E. Swain, Jr. of Huntsville, AR; son, James B. York and wife, Cinda of Derby, KS; grandsons: Brandon and Nathan York of Derby, KS; sister, Barbara Zaravinou of Athens, Greece; and brothers: Andreas and George Boumi of Athens, Greece.
