Funeral service for Rev. Evelyn Louise McClellan Hurst will be 1 p.m., Thurs., Aug. 19, at Verdigris Assembly of God with Revs. Harold Brannon and Don Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wed. noon-5 p.m., and at the church Thurs. noon-1 p.m.
Evelyn passed away Sun., Aug. 15, 2010, at her home at the age of 86.
The daughter of George Edward and Claudia Lee (Findley) McClellan was born June 24, 1924, in Tulsa. Evelyn attended Tulsa schools, graduating from Central High School. She met Kellis Hurst at the Lone Star School House. They were married on April 11, 1943. Kellis and Evelyn lived in the Tulsa area with Kellis working at Douglas Aircraft and later at American Airlines until his retirement. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2002. Evelyn started preaching when she was 14 years of age at surrounding churches in the Tulsa area. She was licensed to preach with the Assemblies of God on May 24, 1943, and received her ordination papers when she was 26 years old. She could play the piano, accordian, and guitar. She took piano lessons for several years. Evelyn held revivals in many churches in Oklahoma. She pastored several Assemblies of God churches including: Timber Ridge, Mazie, and Catoosa. Kellis and Evelyn moved to Claremore on July 21, 1975, to be close to his mother.
Evelyn is survived by her brother, James Alfred McClellan and wife, Billie of Flower Mound, TX; and nephew, Larry McClellan and wife, Debby of Corinth, TX.
