David Gary Shannon, peacefully passed away at his home on September 15, 2023, at the age of 80.
The son of David and Jessie (Eagle) Shannon was born December 17th, 1942, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There he spent his formative years in Tulsa, attending Webster High School and graduating with the Class of 1961. His educational journey continued at Oklahoma State University, where he not only earned his bachelor's degree but also became a proud member of the esteemed Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity.
Upon completing his studies, Gary returned to Tulsa and embarked on a fulfilling career in education. He dedicated himself to shaping young minds, first at McClain High School and later at East Central High School. His commitment to learning extended to his own life, as he pursued a master's degree at Northeastern State University, successfully completing it in 1969.
In addition to his teaching career, Gary ventured into the world of real estate, leaving his mark by developing numerous properties in the Rogers County area. In fact, while discussing a project with his brother at his local carpet store, he met Wanda Kinzer. The two would eventually begin dating, and married on December 6, 1978, in Catoosa. Together the two of them would expand the development and building company. Yet, his life was not confined to work alone. Gary had a deep affinity for water and found solace and joy in activities near it. He was an avid sailor and kayaker. Over the years, he explored various destinations, with a particular fondness for Estes Park, Colorado, Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, and his cherished condo in Ft. Meyers Beach, Florida. In his later years, his travels often centered around spending quality time with his daughter and grandchildren, creating cherished memories.
Gary Shannon was preceded in death by his parents, David and Jessie Shannon, and his brother, Mike Shannon.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda, of their home, their daughter, Tami Thompson, and son-in-law Lt. Col (ret) Paul D. Thompson of Mesa, Arizona; his grandsons, Ssgt Garret Thompson and wife Rebecca of RAF Lakenheath, United Kingdom, 1Lt Austin Thompson and wife Samantha of March ARB, California, and Jacob Thompson of Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma; and his great-grandson, Kacen David Thompson of California. He is also survived by his sister, Carol Lane of Memphis, Tennessee, and sister-in-law, Kathy Shannon of Pryor, Oklahoma along with many nieces and nephews.
David Gary Shannon's legacy is one of lifelong learning, adventurous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
