Helen Kilpatrick passed away at home in Chelsea on April 8, 2010 at the age of 90.
The daughter of Harry and Izora Shaw Gifford was born January 25, 1920 in Talala, Oklahoma. She attended Talala schools, where she played basketball and first met her future husband, Ted Kilpatrick. They graduated together from Talala High School in 1937. On February 20, 1938 they were united in marriage in Nowata. Early in their marriage, they lived in several towns in Oklahoma; then in 1953, they settled on their farm near Chelsea. It was at that time that "Kilpatrick Mercantile" was born in Winganon. Helen ran the store for a while; in later years she worked at the Texaco Station, Lowery's Five and Dime, and Summer's Grocery. She was active in the Winganon community, and was a member of the Winganon Baptist Church for 57 years. She was known for her giving and generous nature. In her spare time, Helen loved to travel across the country and particularly enjoyed visiting the National Parks. One of her passions was watching sports. She loved watching her children, grandkids and great-grandkids playing sports and if you visited her house you could always count on a game being on the television. Helen also loved playing cards and dominos; she had a very competitive spirit.
