Graveside service with military honors for Horace Edgar Cornell, Jr. will be 2:00p.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery under the direction of MMS-Payne Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 14 from 6—8. Edgar passed away on Wednesday, January 9, 2014 at the age of 91.
Born in Battle Creek, Michigan on August 1, 1922 to Horace Edgar and Cecille M (Wyman) Cornell, Edgar was reared and educated in his birth community. Following his high school graduation, Edgar joined the C.C.C’s until he became 18 years of age, then he joined the U.S. Navy and served his country honorably for six years, earning many medals including the purple heart.
With the completion of his military duties, Edgar continued his education by attending Kansas State College, Pittsburg, Kansas. He received his Bachelors’ of Science degree in Industrial Arts Education in 1953 and his Masters’ of Science degree in Industrial Education in 1955. His graduated work was done at State College of Iowa, Michigan State University and Creighton University. In 1953 he began his teaching career as Industrial Arts and Vocational Printing instructor at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 1962 Edgar accepted the position of Head of Production Printing at Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. There he taught graphic arts education leading to a teaching degree.
In the mid 1970’s Edgar retired and moved to Florida to pursue his hobby full time, fishing. He became a guide for the areas local and vacationing folks, who like Edgar, had a passion for the sport. In 2005 he moved to Wagoner, Oklahoma, settling near the lake there so he could spend his leisure time fishing.
A father, grandfather and friend, Edgar will be missed by all who knew him. Those family members that survive include his sons Kenny Cornell and wife Rosie and Kevin Cornell and wife Annie; his grandchildren Kabe Cornell, Karson Cornell and Kelsey Cornell. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
