Funeral service for Hugh Arthur Mathews will be 10 a.m., Thurs., March 6, at Pleasant Hope Baptist Church, Adair, with Pastors Eddy Mathews and Roger Dohrer officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hope Cemetery under the direction of Chelsea Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wed. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.
Hugh passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at his home at the age of 75.
The son of Arthur L. and Virginia Lee (Colinger) Mathews was born March 17, 1938, in Bourbon, MO. The family came to Oklahoma when Hugh was 5 years old. As a child Hugh suffered from Polio, but persevered and learned to play the guitar. He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1956, and continued his education at the college in Miami. After earning his LPN degree he began working for Eastern State Hospital. He met his future wife, Francis “Frankie” Mae Smith, while carpooling to work. They married Jan. 31, 1959, at the First Baptist Church in Chelsea, and made their home in Chelsea. Around 1967, Hugh began giving guitar lessons. Through the years he taught at the University of Tulsa, summer camps with the City of Tulsa, Tulsa Junior College, Vo-Tech, Vinita Public Schools, Shields Music Store, and Guitar House in Tulsa. He also ran his own music shop in Chelsea, Hughes Guitar Studio. He later went back to work at Eastern State Hospital where he retired in 1996. Hugh was always active in his church, Pleasant Hope Baptist Church. He loved playing guitar and trains.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Frankie of the home; sons: Arthur Mathews and wife, Jo of Claremore, and Eddy Mathews and wife, Sandy of Adair; daughter, Lauralee Ward and husband, Rick of Wagoner; sister, Ann Lyon of Las Vegas; grandchildren: Allen and Virginia Mathews, Keith and Veronica Mathews, Lyndon and Amanda Walke, Emily and Jonathan Chisum, Annie, Cheyenne, Irvin Mathews, and Maegan and Kylee Ward; and great-grandchildren: Lyla Mathews and Ella Grace Walke.
He is preceded in death by his son, Allen Mathews; and sisters, Mary Cooper and Gaylene McQurrey.
