The son of Haskell and Ella Haywood Gilmore was born in Dewey, Oklahoma August 1st, 1941. He was raised in Dewey where he would later attend school. While in school he met Mary Jones. They would marry, and have 4 children. Shortly after their marriage James joined the United States Air Force. Upon his being discharged in October of 1962 James returned home to Dewey. James was a hard worker and he obtained his A&P license from Spartan School of Aeronautics which eventually led to a 30-year career as a NDT Inspector with American Airlines. Later, he married his second wife Teresa and together they would have a son. In the years to follow James would make his home in Claremore, where he first discovered a passion for ranching and livestock. He later met Carolyn and they would marry in 1982. James and Carolyn lived the next several years in Claremore before moving to their current home in Locust Grove. They were married for 36 years.
In his spare time James enjoyed working on his ranch, founding multiple businesses including Gilmore Cattle Company and Gilmore Tractor and Welding, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was known to love working his 25 cattle, attending thousands of ball games of his 23 grandchildren, and for getting a couple of tractors stuck. During his younger years he was an avid outdoorsman including deer and coon hunting, but it got in the way of his work. James became a follower of Christ in 2004 and was a faithful member of his Sunday School class at First Baptist Church in Inola.
