James Lon Maggard passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2018, in Vinita. He was 84 years old.
Known to most as Dick, he was born on September 8, 1933 in the Chelsea area, the third generation of his family to make Chelsea their home. His parents were Clarence "Doc" and Fern Maggard. His grandparents, Lon and Cordelia Maggard, moved to Indian territory, rural Chelsea, shortly after they married.
Dick received his education at the Kelly Indian school north of Chelsea. As a child, he helped on the family farm, doing chores such as milking cows, which he admitted that he never liked. As an adult, he enjoyed raising cattle, taking care of his Percheron horses, and pulling his wagon in parades. He also enjoyed woodworking, and making wooden boxes. The thing that brought the most enjoyment, however, was spending time with family, especially when he could play a joke on one of them.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Fern Maggard, nephew Tracy Meyer, and brother Darrell Maggard.
He is survived by sisters Patsy Meyer of Big Cabin, Oklahoma, and Mary Johnson of Chetopa, Kansas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
