Funeral service for Jane Elizabeth McFarland will be 1 p.m., Tues., Nov. 13, at the Blue Starr Church of Christ with Minister Mike Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Mon. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.
Jane died Thurs., Nov. 8, 2012, in Claremore after a long illness at the age of 92.
She was born on Feb. 23, 1920, in Teracitra, Oklahoma, the eldest of 8 children of Andy and Pearl Cole. After graduating from high school in Hulbert, she attended beauty school in Tulsa and worked in a beauty salon in Vinita and then in Claremore. She married Wilfred W. McFarland, of Claremore, on July 28, 1940. During World War II, they traveled to Washington and Maryland where Wilfred and Jane had jobs in the defense industry, supporting the war effort. After the war, they returned to Claremore and Jane opened and operated Jane's Beauty Shop with her friend, Retta Lyttle. Her love of flowers and plants led her to open Rainbow Nursery where she sold trees, shrubs, and flowers. She also helped her husband in sales and bookkeeping when he opened Claremore Electric and Plumbing Supply. A member of the Cherokee Tribe, she was proud of both her Irish and Cherokee heritages.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilfred; brother, Rothel; and sister, Doris.
She is survived by her sons: Dr. Wesley McFarland and wife, Jeanne, and Michael McFarland and wife, Donna all of Claremore; brothers: Leonard Cole and wife, Lela of Tahlequah, Sherman Cole and wife, Nancy of Payette, ID, Clarence Cole and wife, Ruth of Thornton, CO, and Norman Cole and wife, Kay of Van Buren, AR; and sister, Ora De Kleva of Modesto, CA; 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
