Funeral service for Captain Jimmy Walker Combs will be 2 p.m., Fri., March 4, at the Chelsea Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Allen Dunn officiating. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Air Force will follow at Chelsea Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thurs. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.
Jimmy passed away Sun., Feb. 28, 2016, at the Claremore Veterans Center at the age of 79.
The son of Perry Walker Combs and Edith Faye (Merriott) Combs was born April 24, 1936, in Chelsea. He grew up with his young sister, Mary Ruth, attending Chelsea schools until age 16 when he moved with his family to Lawton in 1952. He attended Lawton High School and played football for the school. He went on to attend Cameron Junior College where he was named All-American in football in 1955. He later attended Tulsa University, back and end, and received a Bachelors of Art degree. He played football for a total of 17 years, and had offers for the Pros but chose to fly C-130s and jets instead in the Air Force. He first joined ROTC, and then joined the Air Force in 1959. He served in the Air Force flying for several years and in Vietnam from 1960-65.
On June 1, 1975, he married Judy Darlene Frailey, and became father to Marc and Kevin Frailey. Jim was an avid sports fan. OU and TU were his teams of choice; and he was a long time supporter of the Chelsea Green Dragons where he supported his sons and grandchildren at every sporting event. You could see him on the field in the end zone, at the track, or at the basketball court. The family enjoyed motor home trips across the country and boating. Jim loved his country, the U.S.A. His patriotism ran deep and Eagles were his symbol. He instilled a deep love of country in his family. He also was the 1975 Oklahoma Disabled Citizen of the Year .
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Edith Combs.
His is survived by his wife of 41 years, Judy Combs; sons: Marc Frailey of and wife, Pepper of Collinsville, and Kevin Frailey and wife, Mandy of Chelsea; grandchildren: Jacque Frailey, Cassie Frailey, Nate Frailey, Tori Frailey, Conner Collier, Amber Collier, Misty Collier, Joseph Brown, and Jessica Putz; sister, MaryRuth Dawson and husband, Leon of Chelsea; nephew, Charlie Dawson and wife, Trina of Broken Arrow; niece, Suzanne Coughran and husband, Sam; and great-nephew, Christopher. He was also survived by friends: Charlie Welch, Tim and Martha Gardner, and Allen McHenry; and an extra special friend and roomate from the Veterans Center, Mr. Tolly Pinkston, and numerous extended family members and friends.
