Funeral service for Claremore resident, John Newton Chaney will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at MMS-Payne Funeral Home in Claremore. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11 am to 6 pm on Monday, January 6. John passed away at Emerald Care Center in Claremore on December 30, 2019. He was 95 years old.
The son of Jim Newton Chaney and Wynona Ruth (Plew) Chaney was born December 30, 1924, in Rogers County. He grew up on the family farm near Claremore, and helped his dad run a sawmill near Keetonville Hill. During WWII, John served in the US Coast Guard, and was honorably discharged in 1946. After returning home, he began his career working for McDonnell Douglas and American Airlines, eventually becoming a self-employed carpenter. He retired from this career in his mid-70's.
On February 27, 1947, John married Bertha Lorene Hancock in Columbus, Kansas. Their marriage was blessed with three children.
In his spare time, John enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. But most of all, he loved time spent with his family. He was a member of the local VFW chapter.
John was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and six brothers.
He is survived by his wife Bertha; children John N. Chaney, Jr. and wife Sue, Wynona R. Triplett, and Roy S. Chaney and wife Francis; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and many friends and extended family members.
