John Lynn Schmook

October 9, 1949 — September 4, 2024

Tulsa

Service for J. Lynn Schmook will be 10:00a.m., Monday, September 9, 2024, at Parish of Christ the King Catholic Church, Tulsa.

Lynn was born on October 9, 1949, in Cherokee, Oklahoma to John and Luella Schmook. During his childhood they moved around throughout Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas. Lynn often told stories of spending his summers in Tonkawa with his grandparents, Oscar and Helen Merrell, where they owned and operated the local Mobilgas fuel station. As the oldest of 4 siblings, Lynn began helping with the work on the family farm as young as the age of 12.

Lynn attended several schools as the family moved and graduated from Yukon High School before heading to Oklahoma State University in 1967. In 1970 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following an unexpected injury, he was honorably discharged and returned to OSU and the woman he would spend his life with, Candice Marie Kosted. They married on January 18, 1969.

After graduation Lynn and Candice made their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Lynn and Candice raised two daughters who continue to live near them to this day. Lynn’s love for his family was immeasurable. He beamed with pride for his children and grandchildren. His daughters always described him as their biggest cheerleader/fan. Lynn never missed a sporting event, academic achievement, or theatrical performance for one of his children or grandchildren.

When his daughters moved on to college Lynn used his love of sports to become a football and basketball official serving in the OSSAA for youth and high school sports for over 20 years. He was especially proud to lead the officiating crew in an OSSAA 2014 state football championship.

Professionally, Lynn followed in his father’s footsteps and started his career as a commercial real estate appraiser. In 1974 Lynn became an esteemed member of the Member of the American Institute of Appraisers. And in 1976 he started his own commercial real estate appraisal firm which he owned and operated until December 2022. Lynn was a well-respected expert in his field all over northeastern Oklahoma until his retirement.

Lynn spent his retirement volunteering with various outreach non-profits in the Tulsa community. He was a proud staff member for the City Lights Foundation of Oklahoma, personally serving Tulsa’s homeless population on Thursday’s nights. He also served regularly at Catholic Charities in the marketplace helping those less fortunate with grace and friendly conversation as they fulfilled their grocery needs.

If you knew Lynn, you knew he was an avid fan of all things OSU! He was a loyal and true Cowboy and enjoyed watching live sporting events. He also loved the OKC Thunder, Kansas Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals and liked to watch every game and recap the events of the games with family and friends.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, John and Luella Schmook, his brother, Chris Schmook, and his in-laws, Johnnie and Lena Kosted. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Candice Kosted Schmook, his daughter and son-in-law, Sara Marie Schmook-James and William James, his daughter, Genevieve Lynn Schmook, his grandchildren, Genna Marie Schmook-James, Michael Neff, and Hagin James, his siblings, Alan Schmook (Susan) and Faye Wylie (Sam), and his stepmother, Joyce Schmook.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the City Lights Foundation of Oklahoma.
