Funeral service for Joseph Hubert Leathers will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 at the Epworth United Methodist Church. Pastor Tosha Hollowpeter will officiate. Burial will follow at Chelsea Cemetery under the direction of the Chelsea Funeral Home.
Joe passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the age of 96.
The son of James and Attie Powell Leathers was born near Adair on April 14, 1922. As a young boy he and his family lived in many places throughout rural Rogers and Mayes Counties. He attended school at Bitter Creek, Bugscuffel and Condrey.
Joe was instilled with a strong work ethic at a very young age. It began by helping his family on their farm. It would later take him to western Oklahoma, where he would attend the yearly wheat harvest. Other jobs included driving a bus, truck farming in Colorado, hauling cars, oil field work, and lastly as a mechanic for Ramsey Wench from where he retired in 1984. During all his years of work he still found time to run cattle on his farm.
In his spare time Joe had many things he enjoyed. Throughout his life he loved to play the guitar. When he was younger he and his brothers formed a band and would play at local dances. He also enjoyed playing and singing at church. Joe even considered working on his farm as an enjoyment, although many of his family would disagree. He also loved tinkering on things such as bulldozers and tractors.
Joe was many things to many people, but everyone knew that his word was his bond and he was always there to help his family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Attie, 4 year old son, Keith Leathers, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Survivors include his wife Ellen of 40 years, children, Katherine Leathers Isbell and husband Norman, Harvey Leathers, Marie Leathers, Donna Elam, Debbie Bailey, Claudie Treat, Kathryn Hendrex, Steve Miller and Douglas Toone, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.
