Funeral service for James Robert "J.R." Johnston will be 2 p.m., Fri., Sept. 21, at The Sanctuary Christian Worship Center, Chelsea, with Rev. Darrell Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Chelsea Cemetery under the direction of the Chelsea Funeral Home & Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thurs. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.
J.R. died Mon., Sept. 17, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, at the age of 90.
The son of Hubert and Mattie (Varvil) Johnston was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Webb City.
As a child he attended schools in Osage County & Winganon and later graduated from Grainola High School. On March 13, 1944, J.R. married Norma Louise Pace in Pawnee. For a short time he continued to help his father on the farm in the Grainola area. The family moved to Chelsea in 1946 and he farmed with his dad. He then took a job working construction for Chicago Bridge & Iron. Over the next several years he worked in Kansas, Louisiana, Texas, and a few other places. In 1962 he and his family permanently moved to Chelsea. He began working mostly then as a farmer/stockman and custom hay baling. However he would occasionally take iron working jobs in the area, such as when he helped build the water towers in Catoosa and Oologah. He also was always available to help his cousins and neighbors in the oilfields. J.R. was a member of the Chelsea Historical Society, and Claremore Westside Holiness Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Norma in 2007; parents Hubert and Mattie; son, Terry J. Johnston; brother, Hubert Junior Johnston, and son-in-laws, David Bradshaw and Kenny Nelson.
J.R. is survived by his children: Merrilynn Parks and husband, John; Liz Nicholas and husband, Chris; and Teresa Johnston Armstrong and husband, Tom, all of Chelsea; grandchildren: Johnny Parks and wife, Malinda of Chelsea; Kristie Nelson of Chelsea; Matthew Nicholas of Texas; Daniel Nicholas and wife, Michelle of Texas; and Kathy Cash and husband, Jerry of Collinsville; 6 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
