Junior passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the age of 84.
CMS (Ret.) Junior H. Honeycutt was born March 18, 1930 in Inola, Oklahoma to Willis Herman and Grace Pearl (Biby) Honeycutt. One of fifteen children, Junior was named Willis Herman Honeycutt, Jr. but as he explained, the U.S. Army told him, "Your name is now Junior Herman Honeycutt. Get in line!"
Junior received his early education at Gregory School near Inola. His career training included rising to the rank of Command Sergeant Major and required ongoing military training in advanced paratrooper and artillery (including nuclear). Preparing for retirement Junior completed law enforcement training and continued taking and teaching advanced courses while working in the District Attorney's office.
In 1947, Junior proudly began his lifelong service to America in the United States Army and honorably served alongside his fellow soldiers in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. As a professional soldier, he was recognized for his valiant service and was highly decorated, receiving multiple Medals, Citations, and Commendations including Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Junior was especially proud to have received his Master Parachutist Wings and Combat Jump Wings as a member of the 82nd Airborne.
On April 1, 1950, Junior married the love of his life, Phyllis Marion Remick, in Rainier, Oregon. Junior and Phyllis were married for over 61 years and were the proud parents of six children. During Junior's military service the family was stationed throughout the U.S.A. and overseas in Japan and Germany. Oklahoma was always their home and Junior moved the family back during most of his wartime deployments.
Retiring from his military duties in 1975, Junior began his service to the citizens of Rogers County and District 12. He began as a Sheriff’s Deputy in 1976 serving under Sheriff Amos Ward; in 1979, he assumed the position of Chief Criminal Investigator and worked alongside District Attorney Colonel T. Jack Graves (Ret.). Junior proudly served the citizens of Rogers, Craig, and Mayes counties until his final retirement in 1993.
Junior was an avid outdoorsman; hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes. Always a farmer at heart, he enjoyed raising animals but especially cattle. Junior was also known for the fruit and vegetables he raised and shared from his gardens. However, beyond any of those things he was a beloved and loving husband, father, grandfather and a very generous friend to many.
Those family members that survive include: his children Daniel Honeycutt and wife Karen of Chicago, David Honeycutt of Adair, Bill Honeycutt and wife Robyn of Oregon, and Karen Taylor of Owasso; his grandchildren Rashell, Melissa, Mary, Michael, Logan, Carson, Marie, Elizabeth, Billy, Susan, Diane and Lauren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and his siblings Alene, Ola, Ellen, Ivan, and Rolland.
Sadly, Junior was preceded in death by his parents Willis and Grace Honeycutt, his beloved wife Phyllis, sons Gene and James, and nine siblings.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that your donations be made in Junior's name to a charity of your choice.
