Funeral service for Kenneth Carl “Ken” Steffens will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 2, at the Claremore Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore under the direction of the Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service and Crematory. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Thurs. 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends 6-8 p.m.
Ken passed away February 27, 2012, at Claremore Regional Hospital at the age of 82.
The son of Walter and Leslie Fielden Steffens was born May 14, 1929 in Adair, Oklahoma. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Army. He served as a truck driver until being discharged in October of 1947. Upon his return home he took his military and made it his civilian occupation. In no time at all Ken learned to fix and repair almost every type of car or truck. One day after work while at Copps Cafe in Claremore he met Janice Willhoite. They were married June 2, 1970 in Claremore. They made their home in Claremore, where Ken began working for Kissee Ford. From 1968 through 1973 he served as manager of Ford Garage. In 1973 he decided to open Ken's Garage which he ran until his retirement in the mid 1990's. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling and watching NASCAR. He cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren who were always by his side.
He is preceded in death by his parents Walter, and Leslie; brothers, Charles, Donald and Jimmy, 2 infant siblings and father-in-law, Earl Willhoite.
Survivors include his wife, Janice of the home; daughters: Carla Prather and husband Roger of Claremore, and Kendra Jones and husband, Ryan of Owasso; son, Darrell Steffens and wife Li of Broken Arrow; grandchildren: Katie, Lindsey, and Madison Prather, Makenzie and Kaidyn Allen, and Braeden, Caleb and Abby Jones; brother, Paul Steffens and wife Carol of Arizona; sisters: Janet Souza and husband, Ron, and Linda Bennett and husband, Tom all of California; brothers-in-law: Larry Willhoite and wife, Ladean and Darvin Willhoite and wife, Shelia; sister-in-law Rita Jones and husband, Robert; son-in-law, Derohn Allen; and mother-in-law, Amy Willhoite of Claremore.
