Laverne was born March 10, 1931 at Winganon Oklahoma at her grandmother Trout's home.
The beloved daughter of Garland and Leona Boyd, Laverne attended school at Winganon and Talala, where despite being 4ft 10, she was a standout basketball player.
Laverne managed the Cafe at the Winganon store owned by her parents for several years before it was sold, and then worked at the sewing factory in Chelsea. After a brief retirement, she became the chef (cook) at the Chelsea Senior Center, where she was especially known for her fried chicken.
Laverne enjoyed working in her yard and flower beds at her Chelsea home, which she thought was a mansion. She was also known as Mammy to her grandchildren and numerous adopted grandchildren from the neighborhood. Everyone was always welcome at Mammy's house.
She is survived by her two sons Tim and wife Diana Johnston of Tulsa, and Tommy Chris Johnston of Chelsea; her brother Floyd Boyd of Talala; seven grandchildren: Crystal, Mollee, Jared, Derick, Jessica, Angela, and Sean; two step-grandchildren: Tosha and Farron; seventeen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Garland and Leona Boyd, and three brothers: Garland Jr., Vernon, and Jim Boyd.
Viewing will be at MMS Payne Funeral Home in Chelsea from 5 til 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 29th. Funeral service will be at the Winganon Baptist Church at 2 pm on Friday April 30.
