Funeral service for Chelsea resident, Leta May Mitchell, will be 10 a.m., Wed., May 16, at First Baptist Church of Chelsea with Pastor Jay McAlister officiating. Burial will follow in Chelsea Cemetery under the direction of Chelsea Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Tues. from 1-8 p.m., and family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m.
Leta passed from this life at her home in Chelsea on Sun., May 13, 2012, at the age of 74.
The daughter of Granville Cristo and Dollie Opal (Bryan) Pilkington was born March 17, 1938, in Perry. Leta attended school at Bushyhead and Bixby, graduating in 1956 from Bixby High School. Before her marriage, she worked for the Oral Roberts ministry. On April 9, 1960, she married Dean Mitchell in Bixby. After Dean’s discharge from the Air Force, they returned to Bixby for awhile before moving to Chelsea in 1964. Leta was a hard worker. She worked as a clerk at Jiffy Mart and truly enjoyed working with the girls there. She also worked at other local convenience stores, the Chelsea Tag Agency and at Wal-Mart for a time. In her younger days, she loved to square dance with Dean. She also loved to bowl, and attend the many events that her grandchildren were involved in. She was a member of First Baptist Church, and loved the ladies of her Lois Sunday School class.
Leta was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Dean, of the home; her children: Cris Mitchell and wife, Wendi of Chelsea, and Tina Clark and husband, Paul of Claremore; 6 grandchildren: Cambree, Abby, and McKenna Mitchell of Chelsea, Zach and Hayden Clark of Claremore, and Samantha Gregory of Lawton; brother, Neal Pilkington of Wagoner; many nieces and nephews, as well as all of the Mitchell family in the surrounding area.
