Graveside service for Lincoln Preston Scruggs, Jr. will be 9 a.m., Thurs., June 16, 2011 at Chelsea Cemetery with Rev. Garry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory.
Lincoln died Tues., June 14, 2011, at his home at the age of 91.
The son of Lincoln Preston "L.P." Scruggs, Sr. and Lola Margaret (McCord) Scruggs was born Aug. 12, 1918, in Chelsea. He was a graduate of Fox High School. After graduation he worked at the King Ranch in Texas. He then joined the U.S. Army artillery, later transferring into the paratroopers division. He then trained at Camp Lejeune, and met Edith Ethel Mitchell at a USO dance. They were married on Nov. 11, 1945, in Burlington, NC. Lincoln served during World War II and participated in the airborne assault on Corregidor in the Phillipines. Lincoln continued his education at Oklahoma A&M where he received his Bachelor's degree. Lincoln worked as a mechanical engineer for Thompson Products and Sergent Engineering in Louisiana. He then went to work with Boeing Aircraft Company, where he worked in Seattle, Alabama, and Wichita. While in Alabama he worked on the Saturn V space program, and while in Wichita he worked in the military division. He retired in 1986, and he and Edith moved to Chelsea. Lincoln enjoyed hunting, fishing, and carpentry. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Senior Citizens of Chelsea; and a lifetime member of the NRA.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith; his parents; brother, LaVern F. Scruggs; nephew, Bill A. Scruggs; and sister-in-law, Mozell V. Scruggs.
Lincoln is survived by his son, Lincoln Preston Scruggs, III of Cheney, KS; nieces: Brenda Jean Mondy and Margaret D. Steele of Chelsea; nephews: Dan Scruggs, Ron Osowski, and Preston Scruggs all of Chelsea; 11 great nieces, 14 great-great-nieces, 6 great-great-nephews, 2 great-great-great-nieces, and 2 great-great-great-nephews.
