Funeral service for Hershel "Lyle" Bowman will be 11 a.m., Thurs., Jan. 10, at Winganon Baptist Church with Rev. Eddy Mathews officiating. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Army will follow at Winganon Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wed. 1-8 p.m.
Lyle passed away Mon., Jan. 7, 2013, at the Muskogee VA Medical Center at the age of 90.
The son of Leonard H. and Effie (Jordan) Bowman was born March 9, 1922, in Alluwe. Lyle grew up and attended school in Alluwe. He met the love of his life, Edith Gertrude Hart, at a baseball game, and they were married on April 14, 1941. He worked at the local filling station, before entering the U.S. Army in 1943 and serving during World War II. Lyle and Edith made their home in Winganon. They went to California where he worked for a little over year and returned home. Lyle worked for Continental Company, and then went to work for Douglas Aircraft. Lyle enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, playing bingo and spades, and attending garage sales. Lyle had a great sense of humor, and his family loved to hear the silly songs he always made up.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene Bowman; sister, Louise Stierwalt; and grandson, Keith Cook.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Edith of the home; son, Larry Dean Bowman and wife, Judy of Winganon; grandchildren: Angela Hayes and husband, Danny of Chelsea, Troy Bowman and wife, Janet of Nowata, Kristi Peaden and James Holmes of Tulsa, Kandace and Andy Bell of Broken Arrow, and Kevin Lewis of Winganon; great-grandchildren: Kyle and Lacce Hayes of Nowata, Jessica Bowman of Nowata, Dustin and Mallory Hayes of Winganon, Dylan Hayes of Chelsea, Hunter Bowman of Nowata, Hayley Peaden of Tulsa, Amanda and Mekko King, Shelby Cook, and Kassie Stafford of Broken Arrow; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mexalee Dunn and husband, Billie Jack of Nowata; and brother, Ronnie Bill Bowman of Channel View, TX.
