A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at the MMS-Payne Funeral Home Chapel, at 2:00p.m. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 15,2021 from 1:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. family will greet friends from 5:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The family has asked for friends to wear masks and when entering the funeral home for visitation and the funeral service. Mask will be available at the funeral home.
Margaret Mae Sumter, 74, went home to be with the Lord on September 11, 2021. Margaret was born October 29, 1946 in Pryor, Oklahoma to Wayne Newton & Hazel (Roberts) Newton. Margaret was the first of five children. Margaret grew up as a member of a farming family. She graduated from Salina High School where she was a part of a legendary basketball team.
Margaret graduated from Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1966. After graduation, Margaret pursued a career in accounting where she retired from Pitco Petroleum as the Manager of Revenue/VP of Accounting.
On October 1, 1971, Margaret married Kenneth Sumter. They started an AA and Alanon program in Catoosa where they actively participated. She was a strong supporter of St. Jude & Bogstown. Margaret was an avid reader, expert at crochet and loved catalogue shopping and cooking. She enjoyed bird watching and feeding the wild animals that visited her yard.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her brother Mack Newton and her parents. She is survived by her brother Mike Newton and his wife Debbie Newton of Kenwood, Oklahoma, Dwight Newton and his wife Connie Newton of Salina, Oklahoma, and her sister, Carol Carter and her husband Gerald Carter of Catoosa, Oklahoma. Also, she is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
