Marjorie Ruth Gourd Hipp, one of the few remaining Verdigris born residents, passed from this life May 13, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She was of Cherokee heritage and was 85.
Marjorie’s grandparents came to Verdigris from Vian, OK in a covered wagon. They settled on the main street known at the time as Silk Stocking Road. The Miller name was added to the sign a few years ago. Her grandfather, George Lucky Washington Miller owned one of the two businesses on that street, a black smith shop. Marjorie was born in the house next door to James Thomas Rattlingourd and Bessie Zola Miller Rattlingourd on November 18, 1929. They later moved to their Indian allotment down the road from Verdigris school. The Rattlingourd was changed to Gourd in this generation. Marjorie and several of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attended Verdigris schools.
Marjorie and John Hipp were married for 53 years. Together they raised 8 daughters. They enjoyed traveling and some of the places they visited were Mt. Rushmore, 4 corners, Colorado, Yellowstone, Miami Florida, Vegas and Branson. They enjoyed bowling locally and even travelled to tournaments. They made many friends through this sport. They also enjoyed attending music shows. Marjorie had many talents and cooking was one. Even at 85 years young made her famous chicken and
dumplings for the holiday dinners.
She is survived by daughters Ruth Medrano of Haughton, Louisana, Beverly Jones and husband Willie, Deborah Roach and husband Eddie, Jennifer Granger, Vickie Mullikin and husband Rusty, Cindy Hipp, and Pamela Taylor and husband Tim, all of Claremore. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and another due in June.
She was preceded in death by children Gerald Wayne Gourd and Sheryl Lynn Chambers. Also her brothers James Thomas Gourd, Jr., James Albert Gourd, Bobby Gourd and Donnie Gouard all of Texas.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, May 18, at MMS-Payne Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sun. 1-5 p.m., and family will greet friends 3-5 p.m.
