Mary Lucille Walton

February 8, 1921 — March 10, 2010

Mary Lucille (Newton) Walton, known as “Mom ‘Cille” to many, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the age of 89. She was born near Leedey, OK, on February 8, 1921, to Bernie Lee and Edith Pearl Newton and spent her childhood years in South Texas and Leedey. She graduated from Leedey High School in 1939 at the top of her class in spite of several serious illnesses that caused her to miss a lot of school.
A Memorial service will be held at North Park Trinity Baptist Church on Saturday, March 20, at 2:00 p.m. with Scottie Titsworth officiating.
She married Buel “Buddy” Walton on New Year’s Day, 1939, and they lived in Leedey, where their two children were born, until the family moved to the Oklahoma City area in 1955. Buddy preceded her in death on December 27, 1962, and was buried the day before their 24th wedding anniversary. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Maxine Beach, and a nephew, Chuck Day.
She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Lynn and Bob Clements of Claremore, her son, Eric Walton of Jones, OK, a sister and husband, Lola and Eddie Day of Clinton, OK, a brother-in-law, Arthur Beach of Dallas, TX, three grandsons and spouses, David and DeeDee Nixon of Jayton, TX, Kenneth Nixon of Longview, TX, and Kris and Lupe Clements of Norman, OK, three great-grandsons, Trayven and Daylan Nixon of Jayton, TX, and Jakob Clements of Norman, OK, two nieces, three nephews, and their spouses and children. She always adored little children and leaves four very special, though unrelated, young friends who will miss her: Caleb Luck, Dorie Titsworth, Caleb Bavido, and Amy Piguet.
Lucille lived in East Texas with her grandson and family for several years while her granddaughter-in-law attended nursing school. In 1999, she came to live in Claremore with her daughter and son-in-law until moving to Wood Manor in 2007.
She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of four and remained a faithful Baptist wherever she lived for the rest of her life. She was a member of North Park Trinity Baptist Church where she dearly loved her Sunday School class, the staff, and her church family.
Also, the year she was four, she broke both of her ankles and as she was laid up, her grandmother taught her several kinds of handwork, which she learned well and did beautifully, winning many ribbons at the fair. Crocheting was her favorite and her afghans, baby clothes, and potholders are scattered over several states. She also loved to read and work puzzles, play table games and work with flowers and plants which she enjoyed sharing.
For several years, she entered areawide spelling bees for seniors. Two times, she placed first and she placed second or third a few more times. She represented the area at the statewide spelling bees for two years. She was very disappointed when the spelling bees had to be discontinued due to lack of funds and staffing. She commented only a few days before her death about how much fun that was.
She was truly loved and will be missed by many. The family would like to thank Wood Manor Nursing Facility and Hope Hospice for the care she received from them.
