Funeral service for Vona “Maxine” Haught will be 2 p.m., Mon., Oct. 14, at the MMS-Payne Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Roger Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sun. 1-6 p.m., and family will greet friends 4-6 p.m.
Maxine passed away Thurs., Oct. 10, 2013, at her home at the age of 95.
The daughter of James Milburn “Dick” and Mabel (Baker) Evans was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Strang on her mother’s Cherokee allotment land. She attended a small country school in Strang through the first grade. The family then moved to Claremore where Maxine started the second grade. She graduated high school in 1936. Maxine attended Tahlequah Teachers College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in education. She taught at several small schools around the Claremore area before retiring in 1983 after 31 and ½ years of teaching. On March 22, 1942, Maxine married John Raymond Haught in Claremore. Maxine was a member of the Oklahoma Educators Association. She had a love for learning and was always reading. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, and gardening. Maxine raised flowers and canned the produce from her garden. She had visited every state, and enjoyed traveling in her camper and motor home.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 2000; her parents; and siblings: John William, Forest Milburn, Emma Jean, and Dick, Jr.
She is survived by her children: Suzanne Jennings and husband, Louis, Mark Haught and wife, Carol, Melinda (Mindy) Massey and husband, Don, Peggy Wilson and husband, Dennis, Sara Shawn Miller and husband, Steve, and Melborne “Mel” Haught; grandchildren: RaeNita Grubbs, Laurel Babb, Margo Johnston, Trisha Jamison, Elesha Warden, Chris Haught, Steve Massey, Christy Wilson, Matthew Wilson, Caleb Wilson, Ria Hamby, and Tyler Miller; 21 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for the loving care of Miss Maxine and her family by Rivercross Hospice.
