The son of John Raymond and Maxine Evans Haught was born May 5, 1956 in Claremore, Oklahoma. He was raised in rural Claremore, and attended Claremore Public Schools. After finishing school Mel enlisted in the United States Navy. After his discharge he went to Florida, and earned his commercial drivers license. Over the next several years he either worked as a over the road truck driver, or as a local taxi driver. In the year 2000, he moved back to Claremore to be near his family. Again his love for driving put him back in the driving business. Most recently he worked as a shuttle driver at the Riverspirt Casino in Tulsa. In his spare time he enjoyed watching old movies, and TV shows, being outdoors, and taking care of his pet cats.

He is preceded in death by his parentsJohn Raymond and Maxine Haught.

He is survived by his siblings: Suzanne Jennings and husband, Louis, Mark Haught and wife, Carol, Melinda (Mindy) Massey and husband, Don, Peggy Wilson and husband, Dennis, and Sara Shawn Miller and husband, Steve and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
