Services honoring Richard “Rick” Lee Gowan Jr., will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 22, at Claremore’s JR Hooper Memorial VFW Post 2976. Burial will follow with military honors by the VFW 5th District Rifle Squad at Oakhaven Memorial Gardens, under the direction of MMS-Payne Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
Rick passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at his home. He was 64.
Rick Gowan, Jr. was born February 16, 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Richard LeMoin Gowan, Jr. and Genevieve Maxine (Kelly) Gowan. He was reared and educated in his birth community. He enlisted in the US Navy following his graduation from high school and served his county proudly during the Vietnam War. When his service duties were completed, Rick returned to St. Louis and began a career in truck driving. On June 13, 1981 he married Mary Faye Blunkall in a Salem Missouri ceremony. The couple made their home in Missouri for the first few years before moving to Oklahoma.
Rick had several hobbies that included restoring old cars, constructing model airplanes and boats. He was an active member of the VFW here in Claremore and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who lovingly called him Puga.
Those family members that survive include his wife Mary of their home; his son Jeff Lynch of Columbia, Missouri; his daughter Angela Hinds and husband Jordan of Claremore; his grandchildren Brynlee and Kamden Hinds; his sisters-in-law Earlene Nichols of Skiatook and Brenda Robertson and mate, Stan Shriver of Wappapello, Missouri; his brother-in-law Roger Blunkall and wife Patricia of Claremore and many nieces and nephews. Rick was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
