Robert's education began at the Sequoyah School in Muskogee, where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. He later continued his studies in Oktaha. In his early 40s, Robert achieved a significant personal milestone by obtaining his GED. He took great pride in this accomplishment and showcased his determination and dedication to personal growth.

A man of diverse talents, Robert pursued various careers throughout his lifetime. He worked on a dairy farm and also engaged in farming ventures elsewhere. Additionally, Robert worked for Goodwill for a time.  He also served as a janitor at Arrowhead Mall and the Federal building in Muskogee and also the Federal building in Tulsa.

His talents behind the camera were appreciated by many as he captured cherished moments during his niece's weddings. When he relocated to Claremore, Robert became an active member of Memorial Heights Baptist Church. His ministry focused on providing Bibles to those he encountered during his daily interactions—a testament to his faith-driven compassion.

Throughout his life journey, family held great importance for Robert. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. Ashwood and Clara Ashwood (Foreman), as well as his sister Joyce Kizzia.
