A celebration of the life of Roberta Vaught will be held Monday, July 30, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Inola, OK, at 10 a.m. Roberta passed from this life peacefully in her sleep on July 19, 2018, at Autumn Wood in Claremore, OK.
Roberta Lou Adams was born June 14, 1934, to Henry “Luther” and Mary Lou (Fleming) Adams in Inola, Ok. She was welcomed home by her brother, “Bill”, and was later joined by four more brothers; Lloyd, Dale, Perry, and Max. She was a true farm girl from birth, being carried on her mother’s hip to go into town to sell eggs and milk. Later, in her teen years, she and Lloyd would get up early to milk the cows and deliver it before school every morning. She attended Inola schools all her life. Roberta was a star basketball player and also played softball.
After graduating, she went to school to study accounting, but only for a short period of time. She married her high school sweetheart, Dent Vaught, on June 12, 1953. Two children were born as a result of this marriage. Ricky Vaught and Denita (Vaught) Hancock, who throughout the years would bless her with eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Roberta also had a large hand in helping raise her three younger brothers when her mother passed away in 1965.
Roberta loved her home town and immersed herself in it. She taught bible classes at the Methodist Church, where she was a long time member. She decorated floats for Hay Day parades, and worked at the City Hall. Roberta and Dent later divorced, and she held various jobs to help support her family. She worked several years at Children’s Medical Center, then later worked at Public Service Company, from which she retired in June, 1996. During this time, she was married to Floyd Swicegood for a few years and lived in Claremore, but she and Floyd divorced, so she moved back to Inola and built her little blue dream house on family land to finish out her life there. After retirement, she loved to travel, visit the Senior Center and help out with different activities at the Methodist Church. In 2009 she began a new stage of life in an assisted living facility when she was diagnosed with dementia.
Roberta was an amazing woman who loved to care for people and loved being surrounded by her friends and family. She knew how to work hard and play hard. She was stubborn and strong-willed. She loved deeply, was gentle and kind, and was always willing to help out anyone that needed it. She was an avid bowler her entire life, usually bowling on several teams at a time, and traveled to many tournaments around the United States.
She loved all things sports and very rarely missed any of her kids', grandkids', nieces' and nephews' activities or sporting events. She was always willing to travel anytime anyone mentioned the opportunity. She loved to cook for large gatherings several times a year for family and anyone else who needed a place to go. Her grandkids always loved visiting her house because of the love and attention they received. She was selfless and spent little time on doing things for herself. She loved ice cream and poodles. She was truly one of a kind. Her laugh will be remembered for years to come. She faced many struggles in life but was never burdened down by them. Even in the nursing home when she could no longer talk, she laughed and smiled. Although she never told us to always be joyful, she taught us to be that way by living joyfully every day.
Roberta is survived by her children Ricky and wife, Clara, of Inola, Denita Hancock and husband, Charlee, of Owasso, OK, brothers Lloyd Adams and wife, Sandy, of Inola, OK, Dale Adams and wife, Cass, of Hot Springs, AR, Perry Adams and wife, Leah, of Custer City, OK, Max Adams and wife, Karen, of Inola, OK, eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Autumn Wood for the amazing care given to our sweet momma and for loving her just like we did.
