Roy Lee Hines, 69, of Claremore, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, March 4, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Oklahoma. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 25, 2016 at MMS-Payne Funeral Home, 102 W. 5th St, Claremore, Oklahoma. Burial will follow at Lone Elm Cemetery in Claremore.
Roy was born December 21, 1946 in Junction City, Kansas to Ralph and Evelyn. He graduated from Halstead High School in Kansas in 1965. On April 2, 1966, he married Patricia Ann Wimmer of Newton, Kansas. April 4, 1966, Roy left for Basic Training, and served in the United States Army. He served one tour in Vietnam, and took pride in being a Vietnam Veteran. He received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Gold Conduct Medal 1st Award. After serving in the military, Roy continued his education; he earned a Drafting and Design Technology Certificate in 1970, and graduated from The University Center at Tulsa in 1994 with his Associate's Degree and from Northeastern State University in 1995 with his Bachelor's Degree in Marketing. He was employed at companies such as Hesston Corp, transferring with the company to Claremore in 1977. He worked at ODI and Centrilift/Baker Hughes before starting his remodel business, Hines Construction Services (HCS) in 1999. He owned and operated this business until the time of his death. His most recent work included all maintenance at DHS in Claremore, but he also worked his craft at the Belvedere Mansion in Claremore along with countless other businesses and residences. Roy received citations from the State of Oklahoma for being voted the Claremore Progress Readers' Choice Award Winner for best building contractor in Roger County and surrounding area, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Roy was very involved in the Boy Scouts. He made it to the rank of Life, and served as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America Troops 88 and 238 in Claremore. He helped lead his son, Shawn Hines to the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank. Roy was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Claremore. He assisted the Elks in many of their projects and fundraisers for the community. Projects include, Chili Cook Off, pancake breakfasts to raise funds for the community, raising money for Blue Star Mothers, the annual toy run, and a personal favorite of Roy's, Red Ribbons to give the local schools for Drug Awareness Week. Roy's other memberships include the American Legion and Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in Claremore. He was past President of Claremore Area Jaycee's and completed his Degree Work with Mason's North Star Lodge, No.168 in Wichita, Kansas. He made friends everywhere he went. His smile and warmth was infectious. He enjoyed being with his friends at the Legion and Elks Lodge, reading, golfing, taking long drives on the weekends, grilling, fishing, camping, boating, and most of all being with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Roy is survived by his wife Patricia Hines; his son Shawn Hines and wife Kathy; his daughter Stephanie Hines and husband Adam; his grandchildren Hunter, Dakota, Shaylee, and Avery, bonus grandchildren Cale, Kadi and Cash; his siblings Jeannie Everett, Ben Grosch, and Christina Grosch; other family Regina and Kaleb Striplin, bonus grandson Spencer; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Hines and Evelyn Grosch.
