Graveside services for Russell Stowers will be 1:00p.m., Thursday, January14, 2016 at Okmulgee Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 13 from 1pm--7pm. Russell passed away at the Veterans Center in Talihina, Oklahoma at the age of 96.
Russell was born in Calico Rock, Arkansas on January 16, 1919, to Dematrious and Martha (Payne) Stowers. Russell enlisted in the Army on September 16, 1940 and proudly served his country during WWII, until his honorable discharge on June 13, 1945. During his duties in the Army he received the American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.
On September 17, 1945 He married Doris Lorraine Fowler and the couple made their home Okmulgee through the years. Russell was a butcher by trade and worked at several grocery stores, including Safeway. When he wasn't hard at work, Russell enjoyed gardening. When younger he loved to go fishing. He also enjoyed telling stories about the war. He was resourceful and independent man that saw a lot through his almost 97 years.
Russell is survived by his grandchildren Brian Keith Clark and Kimberly Dawn Thompson; his great-grandchildren Tyler Lynn Clark, Lexie Dawn Thompson, Trenton Shawn Thompson and Laken Marie Clark; his son-in-law William Clark and many extended family members. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris L. Stowers and his daughter Connie J. Clark.
