Samuel Steven “Sam” Cox was born July 17, 1930 in Parsons, KS. Sam passed away Sat., Nov. 16, 2013, at Hillcrest Hospital Claremore at the age of 83. Private services will be held at a later date.
Sam grew up in Independence, KS, and graduated in 1948 from Independence High School where he played football. He then joined the U.S. Navy and was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Anapolis, MD. He graduated in 1953 with a degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force. After his discharge Sam went to California to visit some friends and decided to stay. He met Leila Margaret “Lee” Stoller and they were married on Oct. 5, 1957. Sam worked for Bell and Howell while living in California. They moved to Claremore in 1980 where Sam went to work for Centrilift as a mechanical engineer. Sam enjoyed riding dirt bikes with his boys when they were young, and working with stain glass. Many of his pieces are enjoyed by family and friends. Sam and Lee also loved to travel in their RV to visit family and friends. Sam was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Independence, KS, since 1951, Scottish Rite in Ft. Scott, KS, since 1954, First Presbyterian Church of Azusa, CA, and Claremore Elk’s Lodge.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Garrison and Bonnie Frances (Stuart) Cox.
He is survived by his wife, Lee of the home; sons: Guy Cox and wife, Lori of Rancho Cucamoga, CA, and Scott Cox and wife, Darla of Corpus Christi, TX; brother, Sydney Cox of Florida; and grandchildren: Jaden, Andrew, and Gabrielle Cox.
