Born April 16, 1928 in Chelsea, Oklahoma, to Andrew Norwood and Blanche Marie (Upp) Williams. The family relocated to Claremore when Shirley was very young. She and her sister, Mary Lois, began singing at church early on. Shirley attended Claremore High School, graduating with the class of 1946. In school, she participated in choirs and school plays. She married Hollis Earl Windle in 1947, and the couple made their home in the Claremore area. She continued her love of music and drama by participating in the Claremore Gridiron, Community Chorus, and various theatrical productions at Rogers State College. She and her sister continued to perform, by request, at weddings and funerals for years to come. .Shirley had the prestigious honor of performing Brahms "A German Requiem", in German, at Carnegie Hall with the Claremore Community Chorus, conducted by Maestro Peter Tiboris.
Family came first in Shirley's life, and she made sure her children had everything they needed. Her work as a librarian kept her in contact with people of all ages. She started with the city library and finished her career at RSU's library. She touched many lives during her years as a librarian. Shirley also gave back to her community as a member of the Rotary Club, and for many years, she spent countless hours planning and helping with the alumni association, sending out invitations to Claremore's alumni to return for home coming. Shirley was involved with her church, and her unconditional love for people, especially children, made it a perfect fit for her to be the head of the children's department.
