Troy Samuel Sumter was born April 24, 1930 in Claremore, Oklahoma to Johnie Andrew and Elta Grace (Mannon) Sumter. He received his education from Sequoyah with the class of 1948, later he joined the Army and served his country during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, Troy returned to Claremore and on July 11, 1954 he married Marjorie Jones and the couple made their home in Claremore.
Troy's work career began at Ware House Market Grocery, he later worked for a time at Otasco, before landing a manager’s job at Humpty Dumpty Grocery. After 17 years Troy bought a grocery store in Claremore, East Side Grocery, and along with Marjorie, operated it until the early 90's. He also worked at Giant Discount Foods in Tulsa.
When Troy wasn't hard at word, he enjoyed watching stock car racing, the OU Sooners, and the Dallas Cowboys. He also did a little woodwork and helped with Marjorie's ceramics. Troy kept his yard looking like a park, but his family was most important to him and he loved spending time with, especially those grand and great grandchildren. He was the world’s greatest connoisseur of deserts and probably knew every dad joke ever told.
