Funeral service for Wayne A. Horner will be 11 a.m., Mon., Dec. 24, at First Baptist Church with Revs. Jay McAlister and Jim Layton officiating. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Army will follow at Chelsea Cemetery under the direction of the Chelsea Funeral Home & Crematory. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Sun. 1-6 p.m.
Wayne passed away Thurs., Dec. 20, 2012, at his home at the age of 91.
The son of George and Nora Epps Horner was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Claremore. He grew up in a farming family and attended Bushyhead schools. On June 21, 1941, he married Betty M. Carlyle in Claremore. He soon began working for the Ford Motor Company in Kansas City. Wayne was drafted in May of 1944 to serve in the U.S. Army. He served in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. Wayne received an honorable discharge on July 27, 1945, after three hospital stays and a major operation on his feet due to trench foot and frost bite. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Marksmanship Medal. After his discharge, he went back to farming and ranching, then as an oil field worker, and as a house mover. Among the many he moved, Will Rogers home was one of them. Wayne retired from Peabody Coal Company where he worked as a shovel operator. He was a charter member of the Odd Fellow Lodge and a member of the American Legion. Wayne loved to fish, and enjoyed playing dominoes, hunting, and spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his sons: Donnie and Gary Wayne Horner; his parents; brothers: Murle, Glen, C.B., and A.G. Horner; and sister, Ruth Stover.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Betty of the home; children: Brenda Lewis and Randy Edwards of Chelsea, and Tony Horner and wife, Pat of Tulsa; grandchildren: Mike Horner of Chelsea, Kim Payne of Vinita, Heather Bassett of Chelsea, Amanda Lewis and Rowdy Merritt of Chelsea,
Callie Horner of Chelsea, Angie Brant and husband, Mark of Tulsa, Mark Bowker and wife, Teresa of Tulsa, Kevin Horner and wife, Adrienne of Tulsa, Kristy White and husband, John of Tulsa, Jamie Quigley and wife, Kim of Tulsa, and Misty Cody and husband, Tim of Tulsa; and
great-grandchildren: Cooper Horner, Baylee Horner, Brett Bowker, Brooke Bowker, Logan Quigley, and Maddox Quigley.
