William "Bill" Vincent Gerler passed away on January 4, 2025, at the age of 69. He was born to Gilbert and Helen Gerler on July 26, 1955, in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Bill grew up in Lenapah, Oklahoma, and attended Lenapah Public Schools, where he developed a passion for agriculture and education. After graduating high school, Bill married Jane, and the couple welcomed two daughters, Kriston and Lacey. He went on to further his education at Coffeyville Junior College and then Oklahoma State University, where he achieved a master’s degree in Agricultural Education.
Bill dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring students. His teaching career began at Grove Public Schools, but he is best known for his time as the Agricultural Education teacher at Inola Public Schools from 1981 to 1999. He left a lasting impact on countless students, leading FFA trips to livestock judging contests, cattle grading competitions, and other agricultural events. After his time in Inola, Bill continued his teaching journey at Okmulgee Public Schools before retiring.
Outside of teaching, Bill had a variety of interests and hobbies. He loved fishing, dancing, watching and attending Professional Bull Riders (PBR) events and rodeos. During his younger years, he enjoyed working on the farm and raising cattle, embracing his rural roots. Bill was a social man with a gift for conversation—he never met a stranger and always made those around him feel welcome. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Helen Gerler; his sister, Shirley; and his niece, Sheila.
He is survived by his daughters, Kriston Gerler and Lacey Wyckoff; his brother, Gib Gerler and wife Donna; his sister, Kay White and husband Ronnie; his nieces, Melissa, Cindy, Cassie, and Alyssa; his nephew, Jack; and his grandsons, Dace Wyckoff and Warner Wyckoff.
Bill will be remembered for his warm smile, his dedication to teaching and mentoring young people, and his love for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives of the students and family members he inspired.
In Lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to the Oklahoma FFA Foundation.
