Wilmer H. Short

February 19, 1925 — November 7, 2012

Graveside service for Wilmer Hubert "Vum" Short will be 2 p.m., Wed., Nov. 14, at Ft. Gibson National Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Navy. Burial will follow under the direction of Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Service & Crematory.

Vum died Wed., Nov. 7, 2012, at the Muskogee VA Hospital at the age of 87.

The son of John Henry and Minnie (Wine) Short was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Vinita,OK. The family lived in Vinita before moving to California during the Great Depression. Vum went on to serve in the US Navy during WWII. In 1951, Vum married Betty Rose Garvin in Redding, CA. They moved back to Oklahoma around 1977. Vum worked as a roofer. He was baptized at the First Christian Church in Chelsea. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing, gardening, camping, and being with his family.

Vum is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda Ellen Cooper; granddaughter, Crystal Dawn Stinnett; and siblings: Emory Short, Delbert Short, Annie Asbury, Ernest Short, William "Bill" Short, Elmer Short, Caroline Short, Robert Short, and an infant brother.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of the home; children: Carolyn K. "Skeeter" Sherman and husband, Roger of Verdigris, Laura Sue Owen and husband, Michael of Catoosa, and Wilmer Short, Jr. and wife, Erika of Chelsea; brother, Ray Short and wife, JoAnn of Maryland; sister, Imogene Williams of Santa Rosa, CA; grandchildren: Tracy Hunt, Sheri Michael and husband James, Julie Stephens and husband Paul, Trisha Owens, Roger Sherman, Shelby Dawn Sherman, Cole "Coco" Sherman, Felicia Ann Short Ball and husband Josh, and Alexis Dawn Short; great-grandchildren: Katelyn Dawn Spease, Shealyn Spease, Dakota Stephens, Kelan Owens, Jassmine Hunt, Tarryah Hurt, Alyssa Michael, and Caden Michael; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Stanley "Bert" and Delores Garvin of Idaho. Also many cousins, nephews and neices.
